Hajj means “head for, visit, continuously go, and visit an important and honourable place.” As an Islamic term hajj means the worship done in the Dhul-Hijjah (month) of pilgrimage which is one of the lunar months by completing some spiritual duties by their conditions and approaches properly in Qa’ba, Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina. Also, Hajj Customs are called “Manasiku’l Hajj.”And those who visit those holy places in certain times are called “Hajji.”

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam

It is obligatory for each Muslim, regardless of male or female, nation, colour, language, country, and culture, provided that he/she is financially and physically able to do.

According to hadith

And our Prophet regarded Hajj (pilgrimage) as one of the the5pillars of Islam and showed Muslims how to do it by applying it himself. “And proclaim the Hajj (pilgrimage) for mankind! Let them come to you either on foot or on tired camels which come from distant highways.” (Hajj: 27)

Benefits of hajj according to different hadith and verses

Following are the hadith related to benefits of hajj. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle was asked, “What is the best deed?” He replied, “To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad). The questioner then asked, “What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, “To participate in jihad in Allah’s Cause.” The questioner again asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To perform Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca) ‘Mubrur, (which is accepted by Allah and is performed with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure only and not to show off and without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet).” (Bukhari; Book 2, Hadith 25) (Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Maja)Hadrat Abu Huraira reported that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:”(The performance of) ‘Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.” (Bukhari; Umra; 1) (Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Maja)

Different forms of performing Hajj

There are various methods of performing Hajj that can be classified into three categories:

  • Hajj-e-Tamattu: Hajj combined with Umrah with two Niya’hs, one for Umrah and second for Hajj. Pilgrims wear separate Ihram for each Umrah and Hajj. Animal sacrifice is compulsory.
  • Hajj-e-Qiran: Hajj combined with umrah with one Niya’h. Pilgrims remain in the state of Ihram after Sa’ee. The sacrifice of an animal is compulsory.
  • Hajj-e-Ifrad: Hajj without Umrah. Animal sacrifice is optional.

While all the forms of Hajj are rewarded by Allah Almighty, the most recommended method to perform Hajj by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is Hajj-e-Tammattu, which requires pilgrims to perform Hajj during the months of Hajj i.e., Shawaal, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah. They also perform Hajj in the same year with an animal slaughter on Eid-ul-Adha. It involvesTawafand Sa’ee to be done twice, once for Hajj and once for umrah.

Prerequisites for performing the Hajj

Requirements are to be a Muslim To be of sound mind To be an adult or mature enough To be free, and to have the ability to afford the journey

One should know how to perform Hajj

A person going for Hajj must know! What are the compulsory rituals to complete before going to Hajj?

First Day of Hajj

On 8th of Dhul Hijjah, hajis enter the state of Ihram and affirm their intention to perform Hajj. They pray the Fajr Salah and then perform Tawaf of Kaabah. Afterwards, they move to the hills of Safa and Marwa for Sa’ee after which pilgrims make their way to Mina from Makkah. Pilgrims stay overnight in the tents in Mina and perform all the prayers.

Second Day of Hajj

On 9th Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims move towards Arafat from Mina. After reaching Arafat, they offer Qasr Salah combining Zuhr and Asar prayers. Pilgrims spend their time in Zikr and Ibadah of Allah Almighty seeking His blessings and forgiveness. After sunset, pilgrims move towards Muzdalifah to spend their night under the open sky. After reaching Muzdalifah, they offer Maghrib and Isha prayer together and carry on with their zikr of Allah. Pilgrims also gather stones from Muzdalifah for the stoning at Jamarat, the next day.

Third-Day of Hajj

On the third day of Hajj, pilgrims return to Mina for pelting stones. After reaching Mina, they perform the first Rami and throw seven pebbles at the largest Jamarat. After the stoning, pilgrims must sacrifice an animal to re-enact the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Afterwards, pilgrims (men only) trim or shave their hair and remove Ihram. Many proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaf and Sa’ee before returning to their campsite in Mina.

Final Days of Hajj (Day 4 & 5)

On each day, pilgrims symbolically stone the devil by pelting stones at the three Jamarat and spend the two-three days in Mina before returning to Makkah for the final Tawaf of Kaabah.

Shifting and Non-Shifting Hajj Package

Shifting Hajj Packages

In shifting hajj package your accommodation, hotel, or location of the stay would be changed from time to time. The hotel or apartment is booked according to the availability of the accommodation during the peak time of Hajj. If accommodation is not available near Haram during the peak Hajj days, it is booked away from the Haram and most likely in Aziziyah. Towards the end of the Hajj, you are shifted to the hotel nearer to the Haram. Aziziyah apartments and hotels are mostly accessible during the Hajj days. Most operators also use this time of stay at Aziziyah to train the pilgrims about what to expect in Hajj and how to tackle an emergency.

Non- Shifting Hajj packages

The location of the stay remains unchanged. A hotel or apartment close to Haram is booked for your entire tour. Non-shifting Packages cost much higher than the Shifting Packages as the hotels near Haram cost more during the peak Hajj time. However, non-shifting packages save the trouble of carrying the luggage from one place to another from time to time.
