The Honourable Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Silica, congratulated Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Meteorological Service (NiMet), on his appointment as a member of the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization.

Professor Matazu, who was also the resident status of Nigeria’s resident meteorological regulatory agency, was elected at the 73rd session of the WMO Executive Council.

WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas signed a letter congratulating Director-General NiMet with the following content: “I look forward to your future participation and your effective contribution to the work of the Council for the benefit of all our members. I want to assure you, The secretariat and I will fully support you in performing your new functions,” he said.

Professor Matazu was chosen because NiMet and Nigeria have contributed to the promotion and dissemination of meteorological science information and ideals in the West African subregion and the African continent.

The WMO Executive Council implements the decisions of the General Assembly (that is, the highest body of the organization, that is, the Congress that represents WMO members). The Executive Council coordinates plans, manages the budget, reviews and takes action on the resolutions and recommendations of regional associations (RA) and technical committees (TC), studies and makes recommendations on matters affecting international meteorology and other related activities.

As a member of the Executive Council, Nigeria will, among other benefits, strengthen multilateral and bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and other countries on weather, climate, water, environment, and sustainable development issues.
